Lake Gaston is one of the truly superior lakes in the country. It's 350 miles of shoreline meanders for 34 miles along the North Carolina—Virginia border between I-95 and I-85. Lake Gaston begins at Kerr Dam, a lake built in 1953 for flood control. Below Lake Gaston is Roanoke Rapids Lake, a smaller lake built in 1955 for hydroelectric power. Lake Gaston, completed in 1963, borders the counties of Mecklenburg and Brunswick in Virginia and the counties of Warren, Halifax and Northampton in North Carolina. Our relatively stationary water level provides nature and boating enthusiasts a haven for all water sports and bird watching as well as being home to bass, crappies, stripers and other fish.

Life at the Lake
Lake Gaston attracts a variety of people to its shores for many different reasons. It’s a vacation spot for some, and the number of permanent residents is growing.
There is very little commercialization at the lake, which makes vacation and retirement living so appealing. There are virtually no parks, play grounds, public swimming, picnic areas, etc. Primary access to the lake is from the homeowners property.
Within a radius of 34 miles from Eaton’s Ferry Bridge, the only midpoint lake crossing, are hospitals, numerous doctors and dentists, shopping malls, restaurants, supermarkets, hundreds of churches, many convenience stores, several marinas, many builders; in fact any service or facility needed.
There are hospitals and medical facilities surrounding the lake, in Roanoke Rapids, South Hill, Henderson and Rocky Mount.
